Kindergarten Geometry Unit - FREEBIES
KINDERGARTEN MATH UNIT 2 - GEOMETRY
I am thrilled to be sharing my kindergarten Geometry Unit with you!
The kids love all of the hands-on activities we get to do, and I love how easy it is to keep them engaged.
I am sharing so many freebies with you right here on this blog post. I hope you love them as much as we do!
All activities are aligned to the Common Core standards along with almost all state standards as well - including the Texas TEKS!
This is usually the second math unit we work on, which usually ends up being in about November.
You can print my free November lesson plans for kindergarten HERE
You can also teach this kindergarten math unit any time throughout the school year.
I absolutely love collaborating and sharing ideas with other teachers, educators and homeschool families.
This blog post walks you through how I teach this geometry unit. I share these freebies shown above plus a FREE triangle mini book!
This is such a FUN math unit to teach!
There is so much more to geometry than just learning the names of shapes.
We cover 5 Kindergarten Math Domains:
No matter what state you live in, these units teach everything your kindergarten students are expected to learn!
My Math Bundle also includes a Money Unit as a FREE bonus!

Let’s get started with Geometry!
I am so excited to share that BRAND NEW updates were just added to this math unit in May 2025!
I created new geometry posters, mini books, interactive digital slides and so much more to make this unit even better.
Like all of my math units, everything in this Geometry Unit is standards-based and ready for you and your students to dive right into the skills and concepts using engaging, hands-on activities!
I did my best to organize this unit as I do all my math units – so it is easy for you to implement and use.
I keep my math units in three-ring binders.
I use page protectors to keep my lessons and black lines organized – no more filing cabinets to dig through!
I love this because it keeps my papers nice and smooth, and it is so easy to flip through and see what I have.
I can quickly grab exactly what I need to make copies and prepare for lessons.
The pre and post tests are identical problems and questions - I just changed the specific shapes/solids/numbers on the questions. This will give you accurate data to chart student progress over the course of the unit.
I created unit standard checklists that align perfectly with the assessments.
These checklists are an awesome tool to keep parents informed of exactly what their student will be learning over the course of the unit.
I send home the black and white copy at the beginning of the unit and parents really appreciate knowing what their student is learning about.
I also keep a color copy in my lesson plan binder as a quick reference for myself.
NO PREP ACTIVITIES AND WORKSHEETS
To get the unit started, I introduce key vocabulary my students need to know and practice with some quick no prep worksheets.
These worksheets practice the 2D shape and 3D solid names, vocabulary such as corners, sides, vertices, etc.
They also practice the standard of knowing positional words such as behind, in front of, beside, under, over, etc. (CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.1)
I wanted students to have more practice with shape / solid attributes and recognizing shapes around us, so I recently created shape mini books and posters to add to my unit.
I love incorporating reading, sight words and writing into my math block each day!
Students absolutely love creating their own mini books.
After coloring and tracing the words, I have them read them to a partner.
Once they know the routine, I can place these books in a math center with the posters.
Then they can take them home to share with their families!
Now students have a foundation and are ready to sort shapes!
Sorting is a fun and easy no prep activity.
Included are sorts for 2D vs 3D and sorting shapes regardless of orientation and size (CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.2)
To practice 3D solids are these fun Color Me 3D pages.
Students simply color the correct 3D solids and trace the names.
Standard CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.B.6 can be tricky for students but we love doing these composing shape activities.
Students cut out the pattern blocks and arrange them to make two larger triangles.
They then record how many of each shape they used.
It is so fun to see them arranging and playing with the shapes to make them fit into a triangle.
They also get to make a shape house which is a fun, open ended activity.
I actually like to send this activity home for students to complete with their families.
They then bring them back to class and we share and discuss the similarities and differences in our houses.
These geometry activities can be completed whole group, with partners or independently.
See how many different ways students can use pattern blocks to fill up the hexagons.
They trace and color the pattern blocks and it is an awesome way for student to practice composing hexagons.
The Roll and Trace and Roll and Color games are an easy and fun activity to practice 2D shapes and 3D solids.
All students need is a pencil/colors and a dice.
They can play together or independently. It makes for an easy center or class activity!
Do you use math journals?
These make for awesome warm-up activities or even complete lessons!
You can print these for every students, or just use your projector and students can do the problems in their journals.
I read the problem to my class and we discuss.
I let students think, pair, share and we dive right in!
These problems really get students thinking about how shapes are composed, how they fit together, etc.
Here are some examples of the journal problems (please note these photos are not formatted for printing):
Students just need pattern blocks and a pencil!
I love listening to them discuss and watching them use the blocks to solve the problems.
It is so fun watching them come to their own conclusions and watch the light bulb CLICK!

Practice 2D shapes and 3D solids, composing shapes, sorting pattern blocks, geometry vocabulary and MORE with these fun, hands-on centers.
I also recently added interactive digital slides to my geometry unit!
I love using PowerPoint, but I also converted these into Google Slides. You can use the format that works best for you!
Students love singing along with the embedded songs to learn about shapes.
I have students come up to the board to move the pieces, and these slides lead to wonderful discussions!
