A PEEK AT OUR ELA ACTIVITIES THIS MONTH:

By now, my students have mastered rhyming and syllables, but I still include these practice pages in every one of my monthly no prep packs.

I also always include a monthly writing prompt, “I see” monthly booklets (emergent readers), a goal setting sheet and labeling practice.

How fun is this emergent reader?

We make our little emergent readers every month and by now my students are pros!

These are included in all of my No Prep Monthly packs.

I have them in a literacy center, and since they have done them every month.

I don't even need to give directions.  Students trace the sentences, color the pictures and practice reading them.

Then, they read to a buddy and then take them home to share with their families.

My students like the routine of these activity pages. Many stay the same each month such as our goal setting and writing prompts.

We set goals every month, and I keep them in a portfolio for parents at the end of the year.

This is such an easy way to document their progress and hold students accountable.

I do the same with their writing prompts and keep them all in their portfolio for the end of the year.

Labeling is always a fun activity, and this month label the bunny is a hit.

I updated this pack in March 2024, and now I include differentiated versions of this activity!

Update: one version students match the words, and the other option is for students to label on their own.

Even though my students may not be able to automatically read the words, they can usually use their decoding skills to figure them out.

I remind students to look at the first sound.

I teach an entire unit on how to label HERE.

Included in this pack are quite a few CVC review pages, along with first and last sound matching pages.

We are working hard on word families right now too.

I feel like this really helps my students become more automatic with reading and writing CVC words.

How fun is this bunny word family sort?

This is no prep for you!

They simply read the words and cut/paste them under the correct bunny.

Do you work on sequencing and comprehension with your kinder students?

We start these pages in the fall, and they have come so far!

Quite a few don’t even need my help anymore and they enjoy the routine of these worksheets each month.

These activities are in all of my monthly no prep packs.

easter bunny reading passage with comprehension questions

For both of these activities, we start whole group.

  • I read it aloud first

  • Then, we choral read the passages together

  • Last, they buddy read with the partner sitting next to them

For the comprehension passage, I read the questions and we do think, pair, share:

  • think about the question and your answer

  • turn to their partner and then share their thoughts

I show them how to find the answer and they circle/color the key words in the passage, and  then we can answer the questions on the dotted lines.

Similar to the comprehension page, I read the EASTER SEQUENCING first to the class whole group and then we read it chorally.

  • We then underline the key words and discuss the pictures.

  • Finally, they can cut/glue/color the pictures to place the story in the correct order!

  • I then have my kiddos practice retelling the story to their table buddies (I love listening to them do this – it is so cute!)

When I updated this resource, I added even more fluency and comprehension reading activities.

These worksheets all support the science of reading and students absolutely love that they can read their sight words and decodable words.

We are working on literacy skills including:

  • CVC words + word families

  • phoneme substitution

  • digraphs

  • long vowels

  • blends

  • ending punctuation

  • writing complete sentences

  • vocabulary words

Tip: I don't ever teach blends and digraphs at the same time - it confuses many of my students!

APRIL SIGHT WORDS

To help my students new master sight words each month, I use the same three tools for each word:

  • Color it, trace it, build it worksheet

  • Sentence building worksheet (I always love to throw in writing where I can!)

  • Fluency passage (helps them see the new word in context.)

Using this same approach every month saves me so much time in explaining the expectations and directions for this activity.

I have them trained in exactly what is expected and they love the routine.

All the work is done for you, and these routines save you time!

The six words we focus on for the month of April are: they, at, be, this, I, have

All of my Monthly No Prep Packs have this same set up for sight words!

Each pack comes with these tools for teaching six new words a month.

Plus there are extra sight word activities you can use this month!

I like to use this sight word scramble as a little assessment at the end of the month to see who mastered our six new words.
