FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Do you start school in September? I include a few first week activities in this no prep pack, but the majority of my ice breakers/get to know you activities are in my August No Prep Pack.
I focus on getting to know my students, teaching rules and expectations, procedures for our classroom and make sure my kiddos are excited and comfortable at school.
These activities are perfect for those first couple weeks of first grade, and they are no prep for you!
These activities are a wonderful way to see how students are feeling about starting first grade, and they love Find a new Friend so they can interact with each other, move around the room and meet new friends!
On Friday, students can reflect on their first week of school by writing their own book!
I provide a picture word bank on each page so students can write their one sentences.
SEPTEMBER READING ACTIVITIES FOR FIRST GRADE
These activities will give you a great snapshot of where your students are at.
They review kindergarten standards and target beginning of the year first grade standards.
We work on capital and lowercase letters, CVC words and short vowel word sorting.
Working on phoneme substitution is so helpful when practicing to segment and blend sounds.
Students love to play mix it up!
Let’s label!
Meet your students right at their level!
Students cut and paste the words to label the apple goodies.
They can match the words already written in the boxes or label on their own by reading/sounding out the words.
Students love rainbow sight word writing! They also read and match the sight words.
SEPTEMBER WRITING
We are having so much fun this month reading, writing and practicing our critical thinking skills.
It is so neat to see their progress because we cover these same skills every month, and each time they improve and their confidence grows.
The monthly writing prompt comes with a sentence starter and without.
Also included is an option to have them draw a picture to illustrate their writing prompt.
Use either format that works best for your students. It is fun to do a writing prompt each month and save them in a portfolio.
LANGUAGE
We work on solidifying our understanding of nouns this month (later in the year we practice all parts of speech.)
Every month we practice ABC order, parts of a book and compound words.
First graders need to practice these skills every month!
Every month, students love that they get to read and write their very own book!
Two versions are included: one where students read and one where students can write their own book!
Picture word banks help students write sentences to match the pictures.
It is so fun to see what students come up with, and then they can read their books to a partner.
Students are not afraid to write when you provide them with the scaffolding they need to feel successful.
These activities are simple and are great review for students to practice 1:1 correspondence, counting and more than/less than.
These are perfect for introducing or reviewing how to use a hundreds chart.
There are so many strategies to help students understand addition and subtraction.
I designed these activities so you can easily target addition with and without carrying/regrouping (at the beginning of the year, we do not focus on regrouping.)
2D SHAPES - 3D SOLIDS - PATTERN BLOCKS
These are great review for practicing the names of shapes.
They are simple, but work on spelling and problem solving as well as students must use the word bank to complete the names of shapes.
You can get out pattern blocks and have students match the shapes.
MEASUREMENT, FRACTIONS, 2D SHAPES AND 3D SOLIDS, NUMBER WORDS
We practice telling time on both analog and digital clocks every month!
Repeated, monthly practice helps with this tricky skill.
The standards can be so much fun with these activities.
Every month we work on ordering numbers on a number line, number words, measuring and fractions.
Kids love to go shopping with coins!
This is excellent practice for counting money.
BASE TEN AND PLACE VALUE
Understanding place value is so important in first grade!
These base ten blocks visuals are so helpful for understanding two digit numbers as a group of tens and a group of ones.
We practice breaking numbers down into their place value with so many activities so they can see different formats.
This helps them understand numbers on a conceptual level.
You’ll love how activities are formatted the same each month, so students get repeated practice with the same standards.
The activities increase in difficulty throughout the year to target the skills we are working on.
They won’t spend a lot of energy figuring out what the problem is asking, rather they can get right to work.
Plus, you won’t waste a lot of time explaining directions!
