LEARNING AT HOME IN KINDERGARTEN

The global pandemic we are currently in has reshaped our lives, including the way most of us educate our children. Peoples‘ lives have been upended and we all face a new, uncertain reality.

As a mom of four little ones, I am trying my best to not let my children know my worries. I am keeping my family in a routine, and we are just doing our best to focus on the positive.

I have been a K-5 classroom teacher as well as a homeschool mom, so I feel like I am in a unique position to truly understand what both teachers and parents are facing right now.

Parents are are under an incredible amount of stress right now, including a possible job loss or difficult work from home situation.

Teachers are in the stressful situation of trying to figure out how best to serve their students now that class is no longer in session.

I am here to help - whether you are a teacher or parent navigating a new reality of having students learn at home.

When I decided to homeschool my daughter for kindergarten, I had just had my fourth baby. I was working from home, and at the time, my husband and I had never had a babysitter to help with our kids. My parents live hours away, so we also didn’t have much help from family.

I realized what I was taking on by choosing to homeschool, but I was determined to make it work. But I also had been a classroom teacher, so I had a huge advantage to the position most parents are in right now.

But balancing babies, toddlers, kids, household duties, working from home and homeschooling is just a lot.

So I have been racking my brain this past week of how I could best serve teachers, parents and students during this difficult time.

This is what I came up with, and I am so excited to share a huge FREE pack with you.

Throughout my homeschooling journey, I changed and adjusted our routine a number of times. A lot of it is simply trial and error. Some days I need to teach my daughter a specific lesson while the baby napped, while other days I desperately needed to work, respond to emails, make phone calls, etc. while I wasn’t holding the baby.

I learned to be flexible and have a lot of grace… for myself and for my kids.

So many best practices I learned as a classroom teacher transferred to homeschool as well, including:

  • Children are at their best when they are on a routine

  • Children like to know what to expect each day

  • Children need positive reinforcement

  • Children like to set goals and love to “check off their tasks”

  • Children need to practice a skill/standard many times to reach mastery

  • Children want to be successful

This resources helps children with all of these things, and parents absolutely love the set up.

It is super easy for parents to implement, and this one pack can be used for both academic tasks and at home tasks (such as chores.)

I learned quickly as a homeschool mom that being organized, and making sure my daughter knew daily expectations was an absolute must if I wanted to be successful.

HOW TO IMPLEMENT

Each day, students have a page titled: My Tasks Today

In the upper lefthand corner, you’ll see each day labeled as Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, etc.

Each monthly pack has 20 complete days (this will take you through the entire month if you follow a Monday-Friday schedule.)

There are mini pictures of the daily tasks students must complete, and these stay the exact same each day:

  • Math

  • Language

  • Daily Reading Journal

They are also labeled with specific days to help everyone stay organized.

Students love to color each star as they complete their daily tasks. Parents will love this accountability piece, because they don’t have to constantly ask their child to finish their work.

In my house, there is no screen time until all stars are colored for the day.

HELPING PARENTS AND TEACHERS BE CONSISTENT EACH DAY

If you’re familiar with my kindergarten morning seat work, you’ll know the importance of keeping the format and standards the same for many consecutive days.

I made these learn at home packs with a similar setup…. the goal being easy to implement for teachers, parents and students.

I do not feel like it is fair for parents to try to teach their child new material or lessons each day. I simply don’t think that would be setting our families and students up for success during this stressful time.

Or if you’re using these packs in the classroom, this setup allows for students to complete these as warm up or review pages every day.

The setup of these packs introduces a new standard every five days, and then students practice this standard for at least five days in a row. Some standards stay the same for longer than that.

Students can be independently successful with guidance and support from parents.

This way, parents can explain to their child how to complete the activity, and then the rest of the week students are practicing this skill on their own.

***Please note that the printables no longer say “kindergarten” as shown in the photos above.

I had many teachers and parents wish to use them with TK students, higher Pre-K students and struggling first graders. They now say “Primary” instead so anyone can use these.

ADDITIONAL TASK CARDS

There are three blank spot with stars at the bottom of the My Tasks Today page.

If you’re a homeschool parent, or if your child is currently in a learn at home situation, these three blank spots are your choice.
