Student Behavior Goal Setting Kit
How do you encourage positive student behavior in your classroom?
I have tried too many behavior systems to count - clip charts, flipping cards, behavior contracts… you name it and I have tried it.
What I have found over the years is that no matter what, students genuinely want to do well and they want your praise.
So many students simply struggle with remembering how to act.
Focusing on the positive behaviors I see in my class works so much better than giving all my energy to dealing with the negative behavior.
For example, when we come in from recess and the kids are a little rowdy and we are transitioning right into reading groups, I immediately look around and start thanking the students who are doing the right thing.
90% of students recognize this and it reminds them to do the right thing.
I decided to take this one step further and I created this Student Behavior Goal Setting Kit.
Focusing on the positive behavior, having a chart that reminds students how we should act and giving them awards when they see their goals is a complete game changer.
Every child gets their own chart and I personalize it with their name. They can be displayed on a bulletin board or in a private folder.
These charts are an excellent reminder of what we are striving for: following our classroom rules and expectations and demonstrating positive social skills.
We review our charts frequently and I ask the students what they plan on working on.
This is such a great opportunity for self reflection, and its so cute to hear what they say.
For example, “I am going to work on making someone else feel special.” or “I am going to try to always complete my work.”
When you notice a student is demonstrating a specific positive behavior, they can color the coordinating star on their chart.
They are so thrilled to color the star and watch their goals chart fill up with yellow stars.
Then you can fill out and give them the award for that goal.
I do make sure students understand that I am looking for consistent behavior… so in order to earn their award they have to show me they are following a rule or expectation for a little while before they earn an award.
Personally, I like to make a big deal out of awards, and at the end of the day we sit together and reflect on our behavior.
It is worth the five minutes each day to do this.
We talk about the behaviors we saw that day in our classroom - positive and negative - and then I hand out the awards that students earned throughout the day.
We clap and celebrate our success…. and students are over the moon to take home their awards and show their parents.
I love this because we are recognizing the students who are working hard. This really motivates students who are struggling with behavior instead of shaming them.
I send home the black and white chart so parents can see what we are working on in class.
The complete kit comes with an editable letter you can send home to parents.
It is a lot easier to hold students accountable for our classroom expectations if we get parents involved.
I don’t do this every time, but it really helps to build a strong rapport with students and families if I take a couple minutes to call and let mom or dad know how wonderful their student behaved at school.
When students bring home their award, they can color their chart at home too so parents can see their progress.
This home-school connection helps so much.
The certificates/awards come in both color and black and white.
The BW version prints four per page and the color prints two per page.
The color version also comes in an editable format! Open them in Adobe 11 Reader and you can type their names and Adobe will autofill the awards.
I like to make all the awards ahead of time, personalized with their names, and then keep them ready to go in my awards basket.
To help reinforce and teach our classroom expectations, student can trace the sentences and color the pictures.
There is one page for each of the 20 goals, and these coordinate perfectly with the chart and awards.
You can create a book for each student or just handout the pages individually.
The complete kit also comes with mini posters.
They fit perfectly in pocket charts and four print per page.
